چکیده

Three hundred six crossbred steers (703 ± 1 lb) were used to determine effects of adapting steers to a finishing diet using RAMP for 14 to 30 d on steer performance and carcass characteristics. RAMP treatments were compared to a traditional step-up procedure (CON) utilizing an initial concentration (DM-basis) of 32.5% steam-flaked corn (SFC), 45% alfalfa hay (ALF), 20% Sweet Bran, and 2.5% supplement (DM-basis). The CON steers were adapted to a finishing diet containing 65.7% SFC, 20% Sweet Bran, 8% ALF, 3% yellow grease, and 3.3% supplement (DM-basis) in 22 d. Adaptation procedures for CON included reducing ALF and increasing SFC, yellow grease, and urea. Steers receiving RAMP were adapted to the same finishing diet using RAMP for 14, 18, 22, 26, or 30 d. As the steers were adapted, the dietary level of RAMP was decreased and the finishing diet was increased. Compared with the CON, feeding RAMP improved ADG (4.19 vs. 4.38 lb/d; P = 0.06), increased carcass-adjusted final BW (1287 vs. 1314 lb; P = 0.05), and increased HCW (820 vs. 837 lb; P < 0.05). As the adaptation period for steers consuming RAMP increased from 14 to 30 days, fat thickness (P = 0.06) and YG (P =0.01) increased linearly. Adapting steers to a finishing diet using RAMP reduces the total amount of roughage by 21 to 28%, and increases animal weight gain during the entire finishing phase.

Starting Cattle on High Levels of Sweet Bran in Southern Plains Feedlots

Three hundred fifteen crossbred steers (732 ± 9 lb) were used to determine the effects of feeding high levels of Sweet Bran ® during the grain adaptation period on steer performance and carcass characteristics compared with steers fed a steam-flaked corn and alfalfa-based adaptation diet containing 20% Sweet Bran. A traditional step-up procedure was compared to four strategies which utilized Sw...

Managing N inputs and the effect on N losses following excretion in open-dirt feedlots in Nebraska.

Nutrition will play an important role in meeting the environmental challenges of beef cattle feedlots. Nutritionists are continually refining protein requirements, and have recently adopted a new metabolizable protein (MP) system to more efficiently use nitrogen (N) and allow more accurate diet formulation. Protein requirements vary by animal age and weight during the finishing period. Our hypo...

The SAMP-/RAMP -hydrazone methodology in asymmetric synthesis of 4S-ferrugineone and 4S, 5S-ferrugineol: The pheromones of palm weevils

4S-ferrugineone and 4S,5S-ferrugineol as pheromones of palm weevils were synthesized in 3 and 4 steps, respectively, starting from nonane-5-one employing SAMP-/RAMP -hydrazone methodology. 5-nonanone is transformed to its corresponding RAMP hydrazone by reaction with the enantiomerically pure hydrazine RAMP. Metalation with lithium diisopropylamide (LDA) in ether to form azaenolate, followed by...

Right‐Sided Congestive Heart Failure in North American Feedlot Cattle

BACKGROUND Anecdotal reports suggest the incidence of right-sided congestive heart failure (RHF) in feedlot cattle is increasing; however, the rate of occurrence and risk factors are largely unknown. OBJECTIVE The purposes of this study were to evaluate the risk of RHF over time and among feedlots, to characterize some of the risk factors for RHF, and to investigate how risk factors may affec...

Adoption Prospects and Challenges of Rice-Cum-Fish Farming Technology in the Low-Land Plains of Southern Nigeria

This study examined the adoption prospects and challenges of rice-cum-fish production technology among rice and fish farmers in selected States in southern Nigeria (Delta, Edo, Lagos and Ondo States). Using questionnaire, data was sought from 720 sampled rice and fish farmers in the selected States. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, logit regression. Results showed that more ...
